The Terrell’s home, located in Stranger, was built in 1898 by William
and Lida McKinney. Lida was born on the property in 1836, when Texas
was still a Republic, and after their marriage William spent the ten extravagant
sum of $12,000 to have the house built. The house is a Queen Ann design
and features the front porch, 12 foot ceilings, and ante-room entrance commonly
found in houses of that era.
After the death of William and Lida, the house was used as a rent house for years
until purchased by Sanford Garrett in the 1930’s. Sanford restored
the house to its original condition and raised his seven children there, including
lifelong Falls County residents Joydell Garrett Wolfram and Marion Garrett Gibbs. Both
of whom were members and leaders of the Falls County Historical Society.
After Sanford sold the property to nephews Gordon and Ralph Garrett, the house
was used for many years as the home of Gordon and his family until purchased
by Billy Terrell in 1993. The Terrell’s continue to work at the
present restoration making modifications to modernize the home.
