437 Agnes
Dr. Walter Scott Smith moved to Marlin at 437 Agnes with his wife, Martha Virginia McCrary in 1911. They had two children, Walter Scott Smith, Jr. born 1911 and Mary Catherine Smith born 1913. Dr. Smith was civic minded and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and first President of the Country Club. He was also Director of Citizen’s National Bank which did not survive the depression. Dr. Smith died July 17, 1937, Mary Catherine his daughter continued living in the house until her death. The house is owned by Connie and Darrell Hamilton who have converted the home back to a single-family dwelling which they have renovated and updated while retaining most of its original charm. Another feature of the house is its sleeping porch that was added by Dr. Smith and his wife unfortunately a portion of the porch had to be removed due to a property line dispute. Beaded board ceilings and a mysterious hidden chimney remains anonymous, perhaps forever.
