The Pauline and Jane Chilton
The Marlin Public Library was established in 1928 by the Marlin Library Study Club and was located on the north end of the second floor of Old City Hall. It was set off by chicken wire and had a screen door to enter. The library was open two days a week and the librarian was paid fifty cents a day. In 1938 the Library Study Club became the Marlin Library Board with Marjorie Rogers as president. Vera Reaves Cullom was the librarian from 1938 until her death in 1965. In 1939 Dr. Bolivar Falconer purchased a lot for $2000.00 and gave it to the City of Marlin for the housing of the library, on the condition that the City provide matching funds. A new library was built on the lot, using Works Progress Administration (WPA) funds, City funds, and matching money donated by Dr. Falconer. The new library opened in 1941 a new addition was built on to the existing building in1961, and the Falconer-Stamps Library was integrated into the Marlin Public Library in 1972. The existing building was built and opened to the public in March 2006 after extensive fundraising by the Library Board and the incredible generosity of area citizens and foundations with ties to Marlin and its citizens. The library was renamed the Pauline and Jane Chilton Memorial Marlin Public Library in memory of two wonderful sisters who did much for the library: Pauline Chilton Coquat and Jane Chilton Justin. The Board is extremely proud of and thankful for the Hazel M. Bennett Falconer Goddard Children’s Room, the Bolivar Lang Falconer Computer lab, the Frank Calvert (Posh) Oltorf Historical/Genealogy Room, and the Jack and Roman Gonzales Conference Room. The library is currently open from Mon. 10:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Tues 10:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m., Wed-Fri.10:00 a.m.-5:30, and Sat. 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
